So you want a web site!

    • You came to the right place! I can get you up and running. I am sure you have your own ideas. Your input will be very important in the design of your site. At this point I am going to give you an idea of what I can do and some information you may or may not already have. First of all you must have an ISP (Internet Service Provider)...but you knew that! You need this service to get on the net. In addition to surfing the web, you get mail and various other services. Your ISP allows you to post web pages. Aol has a program that helps you post pages, but in my opinion it stinks! What you really need is some kind of web editor…and know what you are doing! You must follow the ISP rules , but you can post almost anything you want. Depending upon your needs, these web pages can be your web site! You cannot use programs such as a shopping cart there because of the storage space limitations. AOL, my ISP will give me (It ain’t free…I pay for it every month!) 12MB of space. Using this space wisely, you can post a lot of pages!
Assuming that you want to sell something. You can design pages using just this ISP space to post items for sale. You can code these pages to link directly to Paypal for payment, provided that all associated costs, such as shipping, are included in the sale price. All you need it a Paypal account. This kind of setup is useful for a limited number of products. You can also use this space in other ways, I will explain below.
Positives: Posting web pages has no extra cost, can be used to sell items or to post pictures of the grandkids.
Negatives: Limited space. You cannot use any kind of programs such as a shopping cart. Ads from your ISP!!

    • Now we go to the real web sites! In addition to an ISP provider, you need a hosting service. A hosting service will rent you space on one of their large computers (servers) that run constantly online. You can do the same thing if you have the money! A hosting service is the best way to go! You pay a monthly rental fee ranging from $20 (I have seen cheaper rates) up, depending upon the amount of space you rent.
Positives: You can have any E-mail name you want, you can use any kind of program you want, and you have your own identity worldwide,
Negatives: Cost for Hosting and Design plus Administration if you are not adept at this.

    • You basically do the same thing here you do on the ISP pages, you post things you want seen on the web!! However, on a server it is done on a much larger scale! Before you can rent space on a server you need a “domain name”. A domain name is your personal name on the web! You are the only one using that name worldwide! Domain names are carefully registered to each user worldwide. My registration company charges me $24 to register my domain names for 2 years. All inquiries to your domain name, such as mail, are directed to your web site or ISP provider automatically by your registeration company. Next you need a hosting service. I pay 32.50 monthly for my hosting service. I use a "purchased" shopping cart program. The hosting service will rent you their "in house" shopping cart program for another $12.50 monthly. Their program stinks!! You have to follow very strict rules and they meddle in your affairs!! If you want to accept credit cards, other than Paypal, you need the services of a credit card processing company. There is a setup fee and minimum monthly service charges. The credit card processing company also will rent you a shopping cart program. You must buy the "rented" software program!! This program stinks more than the hosting program!! It is setup for use by idiots and has all kinds of restrictions! For instance, you are only allowed to post 10 new items a month. With my shopping cart, I can have 500, 000 items, added all at once! Furthermore...all of your sales and use data, such as addresses, becomes their property!!!

    • The next thing you need to do is decide what you want to put on your site. There are many options and services available...too many to address here. As a web designer I will do my best to put your ideas on the web!

    • I am going to give you an inside look at what I have done with some of my personal domains. This will give you an idea of what I can do and how I am using my “free” ISP space.

    • First of all, I have a hosting service but I use my own shopping cart program. This site, theworldwide.org, is my main site. In addition to that URL I have incorporated two additional domain names into the same database. These two additional domain names, antiquesandartifacts.net and pc-upgrades.net are nothing more than ISP web pages!! Go to these sites and see how they appear to be “active” sites! That is not the case! Two of the sites simply have links to my site with the shopping cart program!! You will notice that the designs for all three are basically the same. This was done on purpose, so that they appear to be “owned” or connected to the same source. I could have designed these pages to look completely different...and still link them together; or I also could have set up three independent databases, using this same shopping cart program!! Why didn’t I do that? Cost…the hosting service would charge me three times!! As a bonus, using the same database, all input to that database, such as inventory, affects all three domains.

    • We also rent web sites with an included domain name!! They are completely setup and ready to go! All you need with this arrangement is something to sell or post and a ISP provider!!
